Many variables surround the need for the conversions of content into accessible format for students studying at Universities. The standards developed by the W3C and other groups help to address many issues and certainly improve the access issues for users of adaptive technology however all content is still not accessible to the many students using adaptive technology.

Posted 2nd May, 2008 by Mrs Jennifer Bainbridge
Adaptive/Assistive Technology
What are your experiences with adaptive or assistive technology? Do you know what we are talking about when we are discussing adaptive or assistive technology? To help others understand what adaptive or assistive technology is, and what it does, and to find out the level of knowledge and understanding there is in the community, I would like to invite all members of the Carrick Exchange to participate in this wiki.

When course content needs to be converted into an accessible format, many believe this is a simple process of scanning and OCRing the content and then handing it on to the student.
Yes, you could do that, if you wanted the student to have content that was not complete, had words changed, had a lot of rubbish in them, was missing content. Would you be happy to receive this type of content yourself? Of course you wouldn't.
